Helping Children with Anxiety Treatments

Anxiety has become a very common thing for millions of people all across the globe. Now more children are in need of anxiety treatments at an increasing rate.

It has now become very common that when children grow up, they tend to worry about a number of things very deeply and this results in anxiety. ‘Anxiety Children’ can happen at any age. Often when a child begins school for the first time or when they score low grades, exams or relate to other children and adults. There seems to be a growing trend to medicate children without exploring all the safer and more healthy options of anxiety treatments.

There are many children who suffer from excessive shyness and they find it very difficult to adjust to new situations. Children do not always have the ability to voice their feelings and they also do not know how to cope with the situations that create fears and anxiety for them.

If they give these a chance they will thank you for the rest of their life. Children love experiencing a relaxed quit mind. If we remove the importance on winning, athletic activities that build hand to eye coordination are good anxiety treatments. Sports like gymnastics, ballet, karate and most team sports with a caring coach build their confidence for handling life’s emotional challenges.

A parent can ask the child’s doctor to recommend a therapist that can support his/her emotional aspects. Please be discerning about putting children on drugs with heavy side affects. Get a second opinion if you need to. Taking drugs for their problems could be a child’s future mind set for “how to handle problems”. If you do go with a prescription, make sure it’s temporary. Doctor’s will later instruct you on properly taking your child off medications slowly. Medications will take away the symptoms but do not eliminate the cause of anxiety. Combine working with a good child therapist by asking your doctor to refer one to handle what causes anxiety for your child.

Create a program for ” how to handle upsets.”

1.) It would been nice to have had a system for handling emotional upsets when we grew up. Like a system where you let go of upsetting events rather than establish deep life long fears.  This could be the anxiety remedy that is most rewarding for you both. Before anxiety gets “out of control,” work with your child’s imagination to come up with ideas to handle worries. Anxiety treatments tips for parents-

2.) Parents can help their anxiety affected child in a lot of ways. If you can join your child during previously stressful events, they could feel safer and not have to run from those situations. For example, if a kind dog frightens the child,  pet the dog yourself until your child feels comfortable enough to pet the dog.  Same goes with school bullies. Make the teacher aware of the situation so she can be on the look out and discuss a plan for responding to bullies with your child. Ask how the bully makes them feel. A child needs to get more comfortable with expressing uncomfortable feelings.

3.) Be careful not to have major arguments with your spouse in front of your child. You may not know it, but stress created because of such environments in the home directly affects a child’s mind. Find time where you can sit together and listen to your child. Be careful not to judge their fears as “wrong” (fears are very “real” to them) and concentrate on letting them express their fears by listening to them.

4.)Practice not making your child wrong. We think we don’t but we often do without realizing it. When your child tells you what they did or said to a bully. Listen. Ask if that took care of the bully problem. If “no” – suggest another way for the future rather than say “You should have…”. Get the picture? Don’t make them feel they were wrong.

5.) There are huge results from anxiety treatments that call for no sugar for children suffering from anxity. Too much sugar works like a bottle of vodka for children. It makes them hyper, shaky, moody, highs and lows and then depressed and angry.  They eventually think that’s the way life is…moody, highs and lows.Parents that feed their children a stack of pancakes and then ask their child, “why are you acting this way” should read some of the hundreds of studies done on child nutrition.

It can be a constant battle saying “no” to sugar cereals, and sugar snacks, but the resulting happiness and the evenly balanced kid will be worth it. Saying, my child doesn’t have a problem with sugar is not responsible. There are no doctors or nutritionist that suggest sugar for better health.

6.) Assure them that things will turn out okay, and find examples in their life where they worried about something and yet it turned out okay. Try to make them secure at home and everywhere they go. Support them to find an exercise/sport/hobby they really enjoy.  Don’t judge their choice. Take them to recreational parks and other entertainment places but be sure not to connect “feeling worried” with getting to go to a fun park- as a reward for worry. That way they don’t learn that “being worried” gets them rewarded.
